The Problem with How We Currently Test Advertising

Brands spend billions on advertising, yet most operate with a fundamental blindness: they don't really know what's landing with their audience in real time.

Traditional ad testing lives in one of two worlds. Either it's forced exposure and recall testing—where you show people ads in a lab-like environment and measure awareness, comprehension, and intent—which tells you little about how ads actually feel when they arrive naturally in someone's feed. Or it's post-campaign analysis, where you measure awareness and sentiment weeks or months after the campaign has run, by which point you've already spent the budget and learned too late what wasn't working.

In between, there's a massive gap. How do audiences actually experience advertising as it unfolds? What's accumulating in their consciousness? When does saturation kick in? What emotional fatigue sets in, and is it fatigue with the message or fatigue with the frequency? What do they actually want to see more of?

Introducing the Advertising Diet Check-In

The advertising diet check-in is a longitudinal research methodology designed to create an ongoing dialogue with your target audience about the advertising they're actually seeing, how it's landing, and what's working. It mirrors how people naturally process advertising—over time, in context, amid competing messages—rather than in the artificial conditions of traditional testing.

Think of it as longitudinal advertising ethnography: structured enough to be rigorous and scalable, but intimate enough to capture the nuance and emotional truth that traditional quant tracking misses.

How It Works: The Operating Model

The structure is elegantly simple:

  • Weekly quantitative brief survey (5-10 minutes): Respondents report what ads they've encountered, top-of-mind messaging, what resonated, what fell flat, what they want to see more of
  • Bi-weekly qualitative sessions (30 minutes): Deeper exploration of the previous two weeks' advertising experience, how messages are accumulating, emotional responses, competitive context, and behavioral intent
  • Rolling cohort model: A new cohort of 10 respondents enters the study each week, with each cohort participating for 8 weeks. This maintains a constant pool of approximately 50 active participants at any given time while managing fatigue and capturing evolving audience response as campaigns develop
  • Dedicated moderators: The same moderator works with each cohort across all eight weeks, building genuine rapport that moves respondents beyond surface-level reactions into authentic reflection about how advertising affects them

Why This Structure Works

The weekly/bi-weekly cadence prevents respondent fatigue while maintaining momentum. You're not asking people to live in the research—you're creating regular check-ins that feel natural, like someone genuinely interested in their perspective.

The rolling cohort approach gives you continuous insight. You're never waiting for a full wave to complete. As Week 9 begins, Week 1's cohort is wrapping up, Week 2's data is fully mature, and you have 7 weeks of rolling data in between. This means you can identify what's working (or not) in real time and provide feedback to creative and media teams mid-campaign.

The eight-week participant tenure is the critical window. Long enough that you see how messages accumulate and shift perception, short enough that you're constantly bringing fresh eyes to campaign evolution. Someone in Week 7 is seeing your ads through a different lens than someone in Week 1—and that matters.

The moderator-as-ethnographer approach is where the magic happens. Yes, you're collecting data. But across eight weeks, something shifts. Your moderator isn't reading a script; they're having a conversation with someone who's genuinely thinking about how your brand shows up in their world. That rapport unlocks the kind of emotional honesty that traditional research rarely captures. Respondents move beyond "I saw your ad" into "here's how your ad made me feel and why I did or didn't act."

What You Actually Learn

Top-of-mind saturation: When does an ad stop working because it's everywhere? Traditional awareness metrics tell you reach and frequency. Advertising diet check-ins tell you when frequency becomes fatigue.

Message synthesis: You're not testing individual ads in isolation—you're seeing how audiences synthesize multiple touchpoints across channels. Your social campaign, your display retargeting, your sponsored content—they're all hitting the same person in the same two weeks. What's the cumulative effect?

Emotional resonance vs. rational messaging: Not all ads that perform well emotionally drive behavior. Not all rational arguments actually move people. Weekly check-ins let you see where these diverge and why.

Competitive context: Your target audience is seeing your ads in a sea of competitor advertising. They're telling you what else landed that week, what messaging competed for attention, and what they preferred. That's intelligence you can't get any other way.

Real intent signals: "I saw that ad" is not the same as "that ad made me consider your product." Eight weeks of conversations reveals actual behavioral intent, not stated intent in response to a prompt.

Implementation: The Practical Considerations

Recruitment and Sample

You need people who are genuinely in your target audience and willing to engage authentically for eight weeks. This isn't a panel of "professional respondents." You're looking for people who actually use the products, follow the brands, and live in the media ecosystem you're studying. Incentive levels typically need to be sufficient to respect their time commitment—these participants are giving you real insights, not just answers.

Moderator Selection and Training

This is non-negotiable. The moderator skill set required is closer to ethnographic research and coaching than to traditional quantitative moderation. You need people who can:

  • Build genuine rapport quickly
  • Ask follow-up questions that probe emotion and reasoning, not just collect answers
  • Recognize when someone is giving you polished responses vs. authentic ones
  • Hold space for ambiguity—not everything fits neatly into categories
  • Document patterns across their cohort without contaminating the conversation

Moderators need training not just on your specific study, but on the underlying philosophy: you're creating a space for reflection, not conducting an interrogation.

Analysis and Reporting

Synthesizing weekly quant trends with bi-weekly qual depth requires a specific analytical workflow. You're looking for patterns that emerge across multiple data streams:

  • What themes show up consistently across cohorts?
  • Where do quant trending and qual depth align or diverge?
  • What's changing week-over-week?
  • What's stable, and what's shifting?

The reporting should focus on actionable insights, not data exhaust. Top-of-mind messaging, what's resonating and why, what's falling flat, what the audience is asking to see more of. Monthly synthesis reports, with the ability to pull deeper on specific findings.

Why This Matters Now

Advertising is more fragmented, more personalized, and more competitive than ever. Your target audience is experiencing an unprecedented volume of messages across channels.

This methodology isn't proprietary. Any research team with the right skill set, moderator training, and analytical discipline can stand it up. But the difference between doing it and doing it well is substantial. The moderators who build genuine rapport get different answers than those who don't. The teams that synthesize quant and qual insights properly see patterns others miss. The organizations that act on findings while campaigns are running capture value that post-campaign learning never will.

Advertising diet check-ins give you something traditional research can't: real-time visibility into what's actually working, grounded in authentic audience experience rather than artificial testing conditions. Not eventually. Not in hindsight. Now.
